When good dogs go bad

My job is KILLING me

January 19, 2008 · 1 Comment

Hoo boy.  As I may or may not have mentioned, I currently have two jobs, as our team leader recently left the industry.  I took over her job and kept my own, so now instead of doing a crappy job at one job, I now do a crappy job at two jobs.

But that has nothing to do with bad dogs.  Since my last visit to these pages, I have discovered that I no longer need to purchase dog toys because there are things out in the world that are much more fun to play with.  Last weekend, the greggers and I spent 20 minutes chasing Molly around the park, trying to get her to DROP THE DEAD SQUIRREL.  It was the most fun she ever had since we took her to the coast.  She sprinted, feinted, and twirled.  She ducked, dodged, dove, dipped, and dodged.

That’s why everyone was so excited this morning when they found a mortally wounded squirrel at the other park.  It started with Buster diving into a pile of sticks and yipping with his tail wagging furiously.  Katy leapt in, too.  I couldn’t see what was so exciting, but Molly eventually dashed into the woods to get to the other side of the pile.  Then all three dogs tried to climb a tree.

I followed Molly’s path around and discovered a very distressed squirrel clinging to the tree.  It seemed to me that it was pretty badly injured.  This is the exact location where the dogs recently found three baby squirrels on the ground, and I wonder if this one was related.  It took me a while to persuade them to leave the area, but eventually we kept walking.  As we headed back to the car, Buster took off toward  Squirreltown again, with the other two in hot pursuit.  By the time I got there, it was an ex-squirrel.  And Molly was playing with it.  Joyfully.  Eventually Buster took over the carcass, which meant that I could finally take it away from them (I never would have gotten it away from the big Molly peanut — she’s too fast).  I gave it the usual variety of decent burial — plastic grocery bag.

Also this week:  Freezing temperatures.  Brrrr!  We’re tough, but not acclimated to this.  So what did Molly do?  She “accidentally” fell into the creek.  Soaking wet in the cold.  She didn’t even shiver.

So, that’s about all the haps.  Now we’re off to Sam’s to buy a pallet of pig ears.  Have a fabulous long weekend!
